How to Properly Clean Your Windows: Our Tried-and-True Cleaning Process
Windows are essential to your home’s beauty and comfort; they offer a beautiful view of the outdoors, protect the inside of your home from the elements and they let in sunlight to brighten up your house. Because they are so key to a home, they go through a lot of action. It’s important to keep your windows clean so that they keep functioning as they should.
Window glass can get dirty pretty easily, even sooner with little hands or pets in the home, but fortunately glass cleaning isn’t that hard. Many Pella Windows and Doors windows have features that it make it less painful to clean the exterior of your windows from inside your home, too. Looking for easy to manage, new window cleaning process? Here’s what Pella Windows and Doors recommends:
- You can start by brushing off your window sill with a small broom or brush. The dirt and dust that accumulates on the sill and ledges will get stuck there for a long time otherwise, and brushing will also prevent smearing on the glass later on. Do not use the same cleaning duster that you will eventually use to clean the glass!
- Run your vacuum’s dusting brush attachment along the side of your window screen that faces inside. You can also use this vacuum piece to grab any leftover dirt and dust on your sills.
- Use a premixed vinegar-based cleaning solution, or an ammonia-free glass cleaner like Windex® or Sparkle® to get your glass clean. You can create your own vinegar-based solution by mixing one-part white vinegar to 10 parts water. Apply your cleaner generously to a clean, lint-free cloth or paper towel and wipe down your glass from several different directions for the best clean.
- Let your windows air dry after cleaning and then rinse your glass with clean water if any streaks remain.
There are more tips, too! We encourage you to clean your windows on a cloudy day because the sun will dry the cleaning solution too fast and leave streaks on your glass. Also, our Pella Windows and Doors professionals select microfiber cloths since they are the least likely to leave tiny particles behind.
